We're bears that care. That's right, CARE BEARS. We're not just driving from London to Mongolia because we love adventure, we love a good cause, too! Please help us support two charities: World Bicycle Relief and Cool Earth, with your contribution.
On July 17th our team will be attempting the 2017 Mongol Rally - a 10,000+ mile drive...and it's for charity! Here's how it works...
We'll be purchasing a tiny used car for as cheap as possible, and we'll drive it from the U.K. to Mongolia.
It'll take about 6 weeks to drive the 10,000+ miles through 18 countries, across several mountain ranges, deserts, and literally through rivers.
Not to mention a few areas with no roads. Like, NO roads. Here’s the tentative route: U.K., Belgium, Germany, Czech Republic, Austria, Hungary, Romania, Bulgaria, Turkey, Georgia, Azerbaijan, Turkmenistan, Uzbekistan, Tajikistan, Kyrgyzstan, Kazakhstan, Russia, Mongolia
Here's where you come in. We want to raise at least $16,000 for charity. $500 will go to the official charity of the rally - Cool Earth. The rest will go to our chosen charity - World Bicycle Relief.
***Money raised is NOT going to the organizers of the event. There was a hefty entry fee that we've already paid, so your donations are going directly to the charities mentioned, unless otherwise noted in a specific challenge.
--::ABOUT WORLD BICYCLE RELIEF::--
Walking is the primary mode of transportation for many people in the developing world. Everyday tasks can quickly become a struggle against time and fatigue. Going to school, visiting the health clinic, and delivering goods to market are more challenging because of the barrier of distance. In many areas throughout Africa it can take 8 hours per trip to collect water that only lasts a day or two. Women often walk 6-10 miles per day to carry 15 liters (4 gallons) on their shoulders or heads for the long trek home. It is also common for schoolchildren as young as six years old to walk more than 5 miles to school each and every day to get a proper education.
Spending most of their waking hours collecting a basic necessity prevents women and children from attending school, farming or doing other income-generating activities. Young girls are especially at risk of dropping out of school due to limited family resources and early teen pregnancy. It also eliminates the time for family care and community life important aspects of life in any culture.
World Bicycle Relief has built programs to provide specially designed, locally assembled bicycles for students, healthcare workers and entrepreneurs across Africa, South America and Southeast Asia. While the bicycles themselves help individuals conquer distance and increase their carrying capacity, WBR has also created new economic opportunities by training field mechanics and employing bike assemblers to support our local programs.
We aim to raise $1.50 for each and every mile of our 10,000 miles journey! $15,000 will provide over 100 bicycles to schoolchildren in need and allow them to get the education they need to succeed.
--::ABOUT COOL EARTH::--
Cool Earth is an environmental charity that works in partnership with indigenous communities. The charity protects rainforest that, without intervention, could be destroyed within the next 18 months. Cool Earth works strategically, protecting forest that acts as a barrier to a wider landscape. Cool Earth doesn't buy land, but instead helps the local communities take legal control of their forest. Your money goes to building better schools, better clinics and better incomes, all of which ensure rainforest protection. Cool Earth is the official charity of the Mongol Rally.
You donate to our cause and in return we do certain things, we call them "Challenges", you might enjoy.
